Fallani lives in a small rural village in South Asia. She and her husband earned their living by working for other people who needed day laborers. Sometimes they had food, sometimes they didn’t.
Fallani says that her life was “very hard, very difficult.”

One day, a man came to their village talking about how his organization, Asha Partners, had helped people like Fallani come out of poverty with a microloan to start their own small businesses. Fallani was interested, but she said, ‘I don’t know how to read or write, I’m not sure there is anything I can do.’ As the man talked with her about what kinds of skills she and her husband possessed, Fallani began to talk about making pottery. That was a skill she learned from her parents, and one that she still used occasionally. She decided to take a micro-loan for $170USD and buy some clay to start making pottery to sell.

That was 3 years ago.
Today, using the skills she learned from her parents, Fallani’s pottery business provides employment not only for Fallani and her husband but also for 5 of her neighbors who help make and paint the pots. Fallani produces 120 to 130 pots a day with her own hands and the total output of the pottery is an astonishing 300 handmade pieces of pottery each day. You can see the pride she takes in each piece that she produces.
She now partners with a handicraft distributor to wholesale her creations, and her business has grown significantly—allowing her and her family to thrive well beyond the poverty line!
